The South West Neighbourhood Resource Centre has been strongly influential in the operation and set up of the Swindon Neighbourhood Wardens. As the new Wardens were brought in to work on the estates, they were given core training in their new job roles.

These were not only essential for their job role, but important skills in the confidence to do the job. The Resource Centre has always been available for us to ask, if we feel we need advice or direction we know we can go to them.

The training we have received has been detailed and of high quality. As well as the range of options being wide spread and worthy. I certainly believe that the Swindon Neighbourhood Wardens would not be where they are now without the total support from the Resource Centre.

South Ward Neighbourhood Management

"My experience of using the South West Neighbourhood Resource Centre has been extremely positive. Right from the start when we were setting up our scheme, staff from the Resource Centre came to visit us to offer support and advice to ensure we had everything covered for a smooth start.

Our Warden scheme has been in operation for nearly 2 years and the Resource Centre have been an integral part to their success, offering training and good practice guidance, as well as organising the Network Meetings which our wardens find invaluable.  We have been lucky enough to hold a couple of the Network Meetings here in sunny Weston super Mare so that the wardens can show off the good work they are doing, and meet other Wardens who have similar experiences.  Lynn and her team are extremely helpful and always willing to support us in whatever activities we are doing and they have helped our scheme to be the success that it is.  We hope to continue working with them into the future."

The South West Neighbourhood Resource Centre has been a real help and mine of information. Not only do they provided excellent core training, but they have designed and delivered bespoke courses to meet out exact needs at a very reasonable cost.

They offer unique and practical training that fits the bill and can be used immediately by staff. Value for money, extremely informative and fun, what more could you ask from a training course!

Conflict Management

A PCT contracted the South West Neighbourhood Resource Centre to deliver pilot Conflict Management sessions to staff employed in walk in centres around the town. Due to the nature of some clients using this centre, staff felt vulnerable in their attempts to deliver a quality service to community members who often used these facilities, including drug users and alcohol dependent clients.

We are hoping to roll out this training to other PCTs in our region.

Some of the feedback received from PCT staff:

  • “ Excellent course – brilliant tutors”
  • “Sessions like these should be run on an annual basis”
  • “Learned to give myself more time to respond to difficult situations. Very good course.”

Core Warden Training

The South West Neighbourhood Resource Centre has provided Core Warden training for all our Neighbourhood Wardens. This has proved to be a really effective part of their induction and a great basis on which to start Warden work in Plymouth. They have all really enjoyed it and got a lot out of it. We have found the staff at the Centre very helpful, efficient and flexible to work with.

A well run, informative and enjoyable course in how to engage with social problems within communities, dealing with different mindsets and social skills. Highly recommended and of use to a wide variety of partnership agencies

Restorative Approaches

Restorative Approaches was excellent. I Learnt new techniques but it also made me rethink and reuse skills that I already have but that have maybe got a bit rusty. I have found that since the course I am thinking more about the way I respond and the language I use. This has proved to be really useful in my role working in the community.

Thinking about situations such as ASB etc. I feel that sometimes we are to quick to go down the more formal route of logs, ABC's etc. I wonder if some of the issues we deal with might be resolved at a much earlier stage using restorative approaches. For example when a tenant raises concerns with their Housing Officer - would this not be an ideal opportunity to use restorative approaches and maybe nip things in the bud before they escalate to families being moved, evicted etc.
